Appearing in front of a crowd of over 550 supplier executives, Daum revealed both his serious and charming personality during his 35 minute speech.   His comments were well received by the audience and generated questions and answers for 15 minutes following his presentation. Most notable was a question on the role of truck drivers and their input in projects at Daimler Trucks NA to develop new fuel economy improvement technology.  Daum described the venture as one of his “love-babies”, or pet projects, stating that “innovative products would produce great results when coupled with a well-trained operator.  The technology is needed in the industry to reduce the price of new trucks, which have gone up over $20,000 each since 2000 due to emissions laws.  In India, new trucks only cost $28,000 for the whole truck.”

Denny Michels

During his presentation, Daum displayed a chart from the EPA that visually demonstrated the over 99 percent reduction in diesel engine emissions of NOX since 1990. “We targeted NOX to reduce acid-rain, it is not much of a factor now, but we have to work on reducing carbon dioxide”. He described this situation as “pushed innovation” and referenced the 2002-2010 EPA regulations as an example. He described the next phase the commercial vehicle market entering as “pulled innovation”, where the market is driving innovations in fuel economy and safety related developments.  Future focus includes technologies such as rack and pinion steering, predictive cruise-control, brake safety and others.

Much concern is seen over the amount of waste energy in trucks, estimated to be much as 80 percent of the total energy consumed by a heavy truck.  Daum predicted that 10 MPG is in the future for HD commercial vehicles “with technology that may not yet have been invented”.

The commercial vehicle industry, in Daum’s view, still faces challenges ahead.  “If your market is down 50 percent for a while and you see a 50 percent increase, you are not back where you started.  If you believe you are, you are a salesman, as an engineer sitting next to you to explain it.”
